Why Successful Entrepreneurs Ask More Questions Than They Answer

Asking questions isn't a weakness. If anything, it shows you care.

There's a myth out there that a "successful" business owner is the one with all the answers. We’ve all seen and been witness to them. The one who walks into a room, states their vision with total confidence, never second-guesses a decision, but also never listens to what others are telling them.

And that last part is the most important to remember.

Listening to what others are telling you is so important. Business owners who build something that lasts are usually the ones asking more questions, not fewer. Those who truly know what their client needs, not just assuming. Those who can admit that a campaign flopped, and perhaps more importantly know to turn to for help and ask for assistance. Those who know their worth, but also aren’t afraid to ask for help and guidance. They treat "I don't know yet" as a starting point, not a failure.

Compare that to the owner who's convinced they've already figured it out. They skip the market research because they "just know" their idea will work. They avoid asking a client for feedback because they “don’t need it”. They keep doing things the way they've always done them because questioning it feels like admitting they got it wrong the first time.

Questions are how you stay honest with your business, and how you keep valuable relationships that you’ve spent time building.

Some of them that I find myself asking include:

  • Who is this actually for, and am I still building for them?
  • What's working that I haven't doubled down on?
  • What am I avoiding looking at right now, and why?
  • If a friend looked at my numbers, what would they ask me?

None of these are comfortable questions. That's kind of the point. The discomfort is usually pointing you toward the thing that actually needs your attention.

You don't need to have it all figured out to move forward. You need to be willing to keep asking, even after you've launched, even after you've "made it," even when it would be easier to assume you already know.
